Greyhounds are great family pets and are excellent with children as they have an even temperament. They are lap dogs; at times this compassionate and friendly dog can forget that they are large in size before jumping on you. Their speed has given them the name of Ferrari in the dog kingdom. This majestic breed can attain a top speed of 45 miles per hour.

Though the present breed is believed to have originated in England.. The unique thing about the Greyhound is that it has depictions in almost every country of the world. They were seen during the Roman Empire and were used for a sport called Coursing which is a game of chasing rabbits and hares. In addition to this, they were brought to USA through Spain where they were primarily used to chase jack rabbits from the fields of farmers.

The most unique aspect of a Greyhound is its ability to see. This sight hound has amazing sight that helps to chase away rabbits and hares. All this is because of the position of their eyes. Greyhounds have a long elongated skull with a tapering muzzle.


In fact this racing dog will touch around 45 miles per hour within 30 feet. This is the reason they are called the Ferrari of the animal world.

Temperament
Greyhounds, contrary to many beliefs, are one of man’s best friends. If you have one at home you would have noticed how this large breed slender dog considers her to be a lapdog. They are intelligent and devoted dogs. This is an even temperament dog that was meant to chase their prey so if you have smaller animals in the house ensure regular supervision and socialize early to prevent any unpleasant experiences.

Greyhounds are very good with children as it is a loving dog but there are times that younger children might not know how to deal with a Greyhound. He has a slender body but it speed and can easily knock down a toddler or infant with his happy wagging tail.

Training & Intelligence
Training your Greyhound is fairly easy. They are not very difficult to housetrain also. Even if you are adopting a retired race dog, it will not be difficult to train him or her. They have average intelligence and because of the subtle nature are quick learners. Greyhounds are essentially pack animals. So they will listen mostly to one person in the family whom they see as their master.

A dog takes around 18 months to reach his or her full height and structure. It is advisable to breed your dogs after at least two years of age.
