About Pekingese
The Pekingese dog breed gets its name from the city of Peking (now Beijing), the capital of China. The breed was considered sacred in ancient China and was only owned by members of the Chinese imperial court. According to legend, the Pekingese was created by Buddha, who shrunk a lion down to a small dog. The breed was brought to the West after British forces looted the Imperial Palace during the Second Opium War in 1860.
